A sculpted stone garden model of fortuna
Description
A sculpted stone garden model of Fortuna, 20th century, portrayed standing and draped, blindfolded and holding a downturned cornucopia issuing coins and wheatsheaves in her right hand; on a rectangular section composition stone plinth, 240cm high overall, 70cm wide, the plinth 50cm square.
The attributions of Fortune are self explanatory -she pours out coins and food from her cornucopia in an entirely random manner, emphasised by the blindfold to show that she is unaware -and indeed uncaring of whom she benefits and whom she does not. However, ancient portrayals of Fortuna usually had her either seated or standing on a globe, intended to indicate instability, whilst she was not often shown wearing the blindfold.
