Pair of sculpted limestone Canova lions - Second half 20th century
Description
This impressive pair of sculpted limestone lions dates from the second half of the 20th century and is modeled after the iconic works of Antonio Canova (Venetian, 1757-1822). Each lion is typically portrayed recumbent, with a forepaw resting over the other, on an integrally carved rectangular plinth.
Canova’s original marble lions, completed in 1792, adorn the funerary monument of Pope Clement XIII in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. These reproductions capture the stately presence and classical grace of the original. The lions rest on matching rectangular plinths. This monumental pair is an exceptional addition to a classical garden, an estate, or as a grand statement in a spacious outdoor area, ideal for enthusiasts of classical sculpture, architectural elements, and art history.
