Pair of marble busts, Italy, c. 1690, carrara marble

Description

Pair of marble busts, Italy, c. 1690, carrara marble. This pair of busts, made of Carrara marble, depicts a god and a goddess. Both are dressed in a tunic that drapes over their shoulders. The goddess is shown with one breast exposed, in classical style.

The busts face opposite directions. Beneath their crown or hood, their hair is visible, showcasing the careful craftsmanship of the sculptor. These busts were likely designed to be placed in niches on a façade, possibly in northern Italy during the late 17th century.
