The oeuvre of the Dutch painter and lithographer Simon Moulijn includes a large number of works on paper, paintings and around 200 lithographs. His main theme is the landscape in many variations.
Simon Moulijn attended the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. From 1887 he led an itinerant life and worked in Rotterdam and The Hague, where he was co-founder of the Hague Art Circle in 1891. Here he became friends with, among others, Theo van Hoytema. He was a painter and graphic artist. In 1917 he became a teacher at the Rotterdam academy. His work has a symbolistic, melancholic and dreamy character. Moulijn had a strong spiritual bond with nature. He often painted quiet ponds, forests, deserted gardens and lush parks. In 1945, part of his oeuvre was lost in a bombing raid on The Hague. His work is represented in the collection of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Kröller-Müller Museum, Gemeentemuseum The Hague, Centraal Museum Utrecht, etc.
