Monumental Italian sculpture of Bacchus with a satyr, early 20th century

Description

This impressive Italian limestone sculpture from the early 20th century depicts the god of wine, Bacchus, in a nude stance, standing with a cup in his raised right hand. At his feet lies an infant satyr. The work is strongly influenced by Michelangelo’s Bacchus and the description of the lost bronze sculpture by Praxiteles.

The portrayal of Bacchus in this sculpture emphasizes the drunken instability of the god, with a slightly arched torso in response to his attempt to maintain balance. The eyes of Bacchus are depicted in a way that suggests blurred vision and the fatigue of inebriation, making this representation less refined and more animalistic than other portrayals.
