Italian sculpted limestone model of Saint George and the Dragon
Description
We present this impressive Italian limestone sculpture of Saint George and the Dragon, dating from the second half of the 20th century. This masterful work depicts the saint in his iconic act of slaying the dragon, an ancient tale of courage and triumph.
The sculpture is inscribed “SAN GIORGIO” and the details of both Saint George in full armor and the vanquished dragon are executed with great skill. Placed atop a robust, square tapering pedestal, this statue has an imposing presence that will enrich any garden, courtyard, or classical setting. The limestone has developed a beautiful, natural weathering that adds to its authenticity and charm.
The story of Saint George, patron saint of England, is deeply rooted in history. The oldest known record of him slaying a dragon is found in stele reliefs in Georgia from the 6th or 7th century. By the 8th century, the saint was venerated in England, and even the Pilgrim Fathers’ ship, the Mayflower, sailed bearing the flag of Saint George – then established as the patron saint of England.
