Dutch Bentheimer sandstone sculpture of Mercury
Description
This stunning sculpture of Mercury is made from Dutch Bentheimer sandstone and dates back to the early 18th century, crafted in the circle of Ignatius van Logteren (Dutch 1685-1732). The piece depicts Mercury, known as Hermes in Greek mythology, one of the most popular mythological figures often found in the interiors and gardens of Amsterdam canal houses.
Traces of white paint are still visible, as these sculptures were once painted white to resemble marble.
An exceptionally rare and well-preserved antique garden sculpture.
