Antique Dutch Carrara marble Louis XVI mantelpiece, ± 1780. From a mansion in ‘s Hertogenbosch. This special 18th-century mantelpiece is made of Carrara marble and is decorated with oak branches on the front, rosettes on the corners and alternating laurel leaves and oak leaves on the jambs. Characteristic of a Dutch mantelpiece, this example is less pronounced than a French mantelpiece. For a Dutch mantelpiece, it is distinguished by the many subtle details.
