A Dutch carved blue and white painted limewood ‘kwab’ console or side table
A Dutch carved blue and white painted limewood ‘kwab’ console or side table. Northern Netherlands, circa third quarter 17th century.
Console table with oblong white veined marble table top, on four S-curved feet, all carved with organic ‘kwab’-ornaments, scalloped, ending in dolphin heads, the shell-shaped openworked front stretcher with a bird surrounded by naturalistic branches and flower heads, the wooden base later blue and white overpainted, the plain reverse stretcher with remnants of the original faux marble decoration that can be found underneath, the marble top considering its thickness possibly original though considering the profiling of its rim ‘refashioned’ in the 19th century
