Description
Antique French Fireplace Mantel – Rose de Bourgogne (c. 1680)
This 17th-century Louis XIV mantelpiece is a rare specimen, carved from solid Rose de Bourgogne. This limestone from the Burgundy region is renowned for its hardness and characteristic color palette of warm rose and coral tones, veined with nuances of ochre and deep pink hues.
The mantel has a robust yet refined appearance. The frieze is centrally decorated with a double scroll (accolade), flowing into a sleekly profiled molding. The wide jambs feature recessed panels and rest on sturdy plinths. The piece remains in authentic condition with a beautifully weathered surface that breathes three centuries of history.
